-Un bel di vedremo-

 

Un bel di, vedremo

levarsi un fil di fumo

Sull'estremo confin del mare.

E poi la nave appare-

Poi la nave bianca

entra nel porto, romba

il suo saluto. Vedi?

E vento!

lo non gli secondo incontro.

lo no. Mi metto la

sul ciglio del colle e aspetto

e non mi pesa

la lunga attesa.

E uscito dalla folla cittadina

un uomo, un picciol punto

s' avvia per la collina.

Chi sara? chi sara?

E come sara giunto-

che dira che dira?

Chiamera Butterfly

dalla lontana.

lo senza dar risposta

me ne staro nascosta,

un po' per celia

 

 

 -One fine day-

 

One fine, clear day, we shall see
a thin trail of smoke arising,
on the distant horizon, far out to sea.
And then the ship appears.
Then the white ship
enters into the harbour,
and thunders out it's greeting.

You see? He has come!
I'll not go down to meet him. Not I.
I shall stay on the hillside and wait,
and wait for a long time,
and I'll not grow weary
of the long wait.

Emerging from the city crowds,
a man is coming, a tiny speck
starts to climb the hill.
Who is he? Who?
And when he arrives.
What will he say? What will he say?
He will call "Butterfly" from the distance.
I, without answering,
will remain hidden.
A little to tease him
and a little so as not to die,
at our first meeting;
and then rather worried
he will call, he will call:
"My little one, my tiny wife,
Perfumed-Verbena"
The names he gave me when he came last.

-  어떤 개인 날-

 

어느 개인 날에

수평선 너머로

한줄기 연기가 솟는 것이 보이고,

그리고 배가 나타나겠지.

그 다음은 하얀배가

항구에 들어오면 축포가

울려 퍼질거야. 보이지?

도착했어!

난 그를 맞으러 내려가지 않을거야.

가지 않고 저쪽

언덕 끝에서 기다리겠어.

몇 시간이고 기다리고,

오랜동안 기다려도

힘들지 않아.

이윽고 북적대는 사람들 틈에서 빠져 나와

사나이가 혼자, 작은점처럼

언덕을 향해 다가올 거야.

누구지? 누구야?

그리고 도착하자 곧,

뭐라고 할까? 뭐라고 해?

저 쯤 멀리서

'나비 부인' 하고 부를 거야.

나는 대답도 않고

숨은 채 그대로 있을 테지.

약간 장난삼아지만,
